Chiropractic care has been around for over a hundred and twenty years and helps many people all over the world with pain and body function. If you haven’t seen a chiropractor before, you may not fully grasp the breadth of this modality and the many benefits of chiropractic care. There are many unknowns and even myths surrounding this type of care. Below we debunk a few myths that are common so that you can better understand the advantages and scope of services that our chiropractors offer.

MYTH #1: Once I start seeing a chiropractor I will have to keep going forever.

FACT #1: This is a common misconception I hear a lot, and my goal as a practitioner is to get you better so you DO NOT have to come back! During your initial visit we will come up with a treatment plan tailored to your goals, and the length of the treatment plan varies from person to person. Towards the end of your treatment plan we’ll likely start spreading out appointments and giving you the tools to manage your symptoms at home. After resolution, some people like to check in every month or so for maintenance care, and others like to come back only when they feel a new complaint arises!

MYTH #2: The adjustment will hurt!

FACT #2: Depending on your condition, chiropractic adjustments can be a great treatment option, especially for the neck and back. You may be a little bit sore following the adjustment, but the adjustment itself is not painful and can actually provide quite a bit of relief. The cracking noise is simply gas being released from the joint capsule, similar to when you open a pop can.

MYTH #3: Chiropractors only treat back pain.

FACT #3: While chiropractors do specialize in conditions of the spine including the back and neck, we are also well trained to treat any musculoskeletal condition. Some common conditions chiropractors treat and manage are:

  • Headaches
  • Sciatica
  • Sprains and strains
  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Concussions
  • Sports rehabilitation or post surgical rehabilitation
  • TMJ pain
  • Pregnancy aches and pains
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Rotator cuff problems
  • Plantar fasciitis

MYTH #4: Chiropractors only crack your back.

FACT #4: Chiropractic adjustments are great for some common types of neck and back pain, but we can also provide many other therapeutic modalities depending on your complaint. Treatment options can include joint mobilizations, acupuncture, soft tissue therapy and massage, rehabilitation exercises, and education on lifestyle modifications.

MYTH #5: Chiropractors are not real doctors.

FACT#5: Chiropractors are regulated health care professionals, and are designated to use the term doctor along with physicians, optometrists, dentists, and naturopaths. As primary health care providers, chiropractors are trained to perform a detailed history and exam in order to provide you with a diagnosis and treatment plan. Not only do chiropractors require a 4-year undergraduate degree, they also complete a 4-year doctorate program followed by national licensing exams.
