In a groundbreaking move to support inclusive spaces for parents and caregivers, Rooted Family Wellness Centre proudly hosted the inaugural lactation/feeding tent at the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. From May 25 and 26th 2024, this large event welcomed over 37,000 runners plus thousands more spectators. The addition of a lactation/feeding tent marks a significant leap forward in providing family-friendly policies within the race community. We would like to thank and recognize the BadAss Lady Gang Ottawa run club for their support to help make this tent happen.

Addressing a Critical Need

Recognizing the challenges faced by nursing mothers and parents with infants during large-scale events, Rooted Family Wellness Centre responded to the need for a dedicated lactation space. The introduction of the lactation/feeding tent aimed to create a comfortable and supportive environment where parents could nurture their babies' needs in a comfortable environment while enjoying the race festivities.

A Haven of Comfort and Convenience

Situated conveniently near the race start, the lactation/feeding tent provided a sanctuary for breastfeeding, infant feeding, and pumping. Equipped with essential amenities such as comfortable seating, hand sanitizers, and power outlets for electric breast pumps, the tent offered a respite amidst the hustle and bustle of the race weekend.

Celebrating Inclusivity

Erin Kasungu and Christine Crook, Directors and Co-founders of Rooted Family Wellness Centre, were very excited to host the lactation/feeding tent, emphasising our commitment to equitable spaces and support for parents. This event highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive environment where parents with young children feel welcome and supported.

A Resounding Success

The addition of the lactation/feeding tent garnered widespread praise from participants, spectators, and the broader community. Jessica Halsall, a local runner and new mother, commended the initiative, emphasizing its significance in facilitating her return to running and an active lifestyle.

Looking Ahead

As leaders in redefining support for parents, Rooted Family Wellness Centre remains committed to fostering environments that prioritize the needs of families. With the success of the lactation/feeding tent at the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, both organizations are looking forward to continuing their efforts to promote inclusivity and accessibility in all aspects of community life and hope this initiative encourages other events to follow suit.
